The files downloaded by the Madrid bombers

The last time we visited the 11-M Madrid Bombing indictment it was to note the sites visited by the bombers. Currently we are reviewing the files they downloaded from those sites as they were identified in the computer forensics section of the indictment. In our first pass through we categorized the files based on the description and/or categorization of the files as done by the investigators. As we transfer the data to a spreadsheet for further analysis it seems clear that these numbers will change somewhat.

Category No. of files Percentage
Ideological/theological 140 76
Agitation/propaganda 28 15
Terrorist tradecraft 14 8
Miscellaneous 2 1
Pornography 1 1
Totals 185 100

Summary table of files downloaded by the Madrid bombers

There is some question regarding when a work of Islamic doctrine crosses the line and become a work meant to agitate or propagandize. The files that deal with terrorist tradecraft are easier to categorize, and at first glance they mostly dealt with explosives. This is of interest because of all the post-11 September "homegrown" terrorist plots of which we are aware, only the 11-M bombers may actually have been self-taught. In terms of the debate over the efficacy of online training in explosives, one would do well to note that the Madrid bombers used commercial explosives and detonators - meaning that they only had to learn how to assemble and wire the devices.
