Default Book Reading Etiquette

It's one of them days where inane questions come to mind.

So, when you read a book, how do you mark where you last read up to? I'm asking because someone I work with has this thing about not turning the corner of the page over to show where you last were.

Scholars have traditionally had great reverence for books, including how to mark them.

Ibn Jamaa'ah says in his book (which I originally mentioned in: Etiquette of those seeking knowledge...):

The margins or corners of pages should not be folded, nor are they marked by a stick or something hard, rather some paper or its like. If it is binded then don't let it be bound by something tough*.

The editor mentions in the footnotes:

I say: These blameworthy practices exist in most schools and studies. They are truly poor etiquettes with books which you want to beautify your souls with their knowledge, and raise them with their benefits above others. So be careful not to discard them. Who wants to lose the most worthy of things from pearls and rubies, yet books are dearer and more valuable than these worthy things?
Another common practice, especially when reading a book to a teacher, is to write balagha (reached) along with the date at the end of the lesson.

*Would others concede that it should be tafara not zafara? Dar al-Kutub al-'Ilmiyya are notorious for poor editing, and this was the only copy I could find at the time.
And Allah knows best.

So is anyone else really down on dog-ear-ing (turning the page corner over as a marker) books?

I sometimes leave it upside down or finish at the end of a chapter. But most of the time I remember the page number. It's easier than you think it is.

Well I used to do that but then say you had a busy week and had to earmark the book often I would get lost and then the top of the book would end up wider than the bottom .

I put anything paper like; tissue,a peice of news paper or a traditional book mark.

I have this thing with my books. I think I might go to extreems with them. My wife thinks I am nuts.

Daniel AlJughaifi's don't do's with his books:

Highlight pages!!! (this ruins the book as far as I am concerned, and it will make you always concentrait on that highlighted area should you or anyone else turn to it).

Dog ears!!! (this is like one of the most horrible this one could ever do as far as I am concerned).

Placing the book down on it's pages!!! (and thats just sick....)

There are many more but I might get sick to mention them.

There was someone I know, they would not want people to open the book up completely when they read it. They would only open it to see the text, but not flatten it to break the spine, or ever fold it on itself (cover to cover for paperbacks). This way, they always looked like they'd never be loved... i mean read. =S
