Assalamualikum Wa Rahmatullah,

Can someone direct me to something like a "dummies guide" to madhabs if something like that exists.

Jazakullahkahir.

Asalamualaikum Wr Wb
Theymay not be exactly one book or a "dumbies guide" but I think they are easy to understand.
Here are three that I think will be just fine for you inshaAllah.

I think that if a beginer reads these books through and understands well what he/she has read, he/she will have a good understanding of the madhahib, their creed and weather or not one must make taqleed of them.
