2. The announcement

al-Fajr Media Center's announcement of kanzhassan.com

kanzhassan.com was announced on or about 5 October 2006 by the al-Fajr Media Center. The announcement was redistributed by the Ansar-Jihad email list, other mailing lists, and the usual suspect jihadist forums.

3. The al-Fajr Media Center

The involvement of the al-Fajr Media Center in promoting, if not establishing, kanzhassan.com is interesting. We are not certain of the significance of this, but al-Fajr is currently the network of jihadis that organizes the distribution of official communications from al-Qaida in Iraq and affiliated terrorist outfits. Their involvement gives kanzhassan.com a degree of credibility right from the start that might otherwise take months or years to establish. Clearly someone thinks highly of Mr. Hassan.

4. Abdel Hakim Hassan (Abu Amrw)

The "expert" jihadis on the al-Hesbah forum had never heard of the Sheikh, and responded to the announcement of his site by asking for more information about him. They received one response, from another al-Hesbah user, stating that Hassan was from Khorasan. We note that his signature appears on a petition against parliamentary democracy, where he is identified as Egyptian. One occurance of the petition is on the Hamas forum palestinianforum.net:

Hassan has written extensively and kanzhassan.com is a collection of his works, presented as both Word™ documents and FlashPaper™ files (the latter being an alternative to .pdf that displays in the browser). His doctrines are all in the framework of Jihadi-Salafi and Takfiri thought, they bear a striking similarity to the works of al-Maqdisi, and much of his work focuses on approving or justifying the fight against apostate Muslim governments.

One example of his work that occurs off of the kanzhassan.com site is found on the al-Maqreze site, and argues against any support for Hizballah in the recent war with Israel.

7. Final thoughts

While the involvement of the al-Fajr group in promoting this site lends it credibility, and an initial assessment of the Sheikh's writings show them to be consistent with jihadi/salafi and takfiri teachings, it is hard not to be at least a little suspicious of the Sheikh and his site - arising as they have seemingly out of nowhere, so complete, and so suddenly. It is possible, however, that we live in an age where nothing seems "real" until it is on the Internet, and that this "new" cleric has been toiling away offline in a place, such as Uzbekistan for example, where internet access was unavailable to him.
